Things Done Right

Environmentally Friendly Features of Ellwood's Coffee

Acorn Sign Graphics of Richmond has worked directly with us to incorporate long lasting, sustainable and beautiful exterior and interior signage. Acorn used reclaimed metals to produce the patio seating tables, including reclaimed highway signs for the table tops. All of the exterior signs are constructed of sustainable materials that will last over time and use low energy means of lighting such as LED.

Concrete Ideas of Richmond Virginia provided us with sustainable concrete made with conscientious manufacturing methods. They used industrial by-product and incorporated post-consumer glass bottles from Ellwood's own recycle bin, saving them from the landfill. They also used local ingredients such as sand, river gravel, and crushed stone, all abundant in the area, minimizing transportation.

E.T. Moore Reclaimed Timbers worked with us to use reclaimed Loblolly Pine from the Lucky Strike Tobacco Warehouse in Richmond. This was the preferred structural material in the 1800's but was unfortunately timbered off by the 1900's. Their methods have directly decreased the amount of virgin wood used in our coffee shop.

Sally Smith Ltd. -- While visiting local antique shops, flea markets, old barns and attics throughout Richmond and along the East Coast, Sally Smith Ltd. found furniture that had lived a prior life but could be used again in the coffee shop. And by using eco-friendly local companies, we re-covered and re-shaped the old into well-loved looking, comfortable, usable pieces.

On top of these wonderful community partners Ellwood's Coffee features many other green aspects. For example, all of the table tops were constructed from recycled shelves from the Essex County General Store, our restrooms have duel-flush toilets, the walls are plastered with American Clay and low VOC paint, and we provide receptacles for composting, and recycling as well as land fill waste. All of our "TO GO" containers are compostable and/or made from recycled or plant-based materials.
